Dean Chadd never did win a championship at Midwest Speedway, but he certainly became one of the era's most exciting drivers. When he took his first Green Flag of the 1981 season, Dean "the Dream" began a long engaging Sprint Car career. Funny though, it began one night before in 1979 thanks to Doug Wolfgang. Wolfgang set Dean up with a car and loaned him one of his driving suits to allow the neophyte to get his first seat time. He flipped.

Dean became popular due to his win it or wear it sort of habit. Almost nothing from the stands was as exciting to watch then Chadd enter turn one like a scalded dog. Often his Firestone, later McCreary, would hook the cushion hard and he'd hammer it through to the back straight. The unfortunate part was when he hit the cushion too hard. But nonetheless Chadd's right foot took him to a total of fifty-one Checkered Flags at the Track.
