Jim Goettsche had directed his Sprint Car around this 3/8's to three top five finishes in 1978. With partner Joe Britten, they returned in 1982 for another chance to win Pete Leikam's money. The two built a competitive Sprint Car with their own two hands. Joe and Jim forged their very own chassis with all ideas taken from a Butch Bahr layout. Alone they fashioned a fast engine. But it took more than their own pockets to bring them to Midwest Speedway on a weekly basis. The Grand Island crop should have been a serious contender.
Their handy-work did run hard when Mid Continent Raceway, a skip from Doniphan, ran true Open Wheel on Saturday nights. In fact Jim in the number three was a sight since the earliest nights of competition at the existing track. The team made their regular visits to victory lane during the Mid Continent summer nights. Joe admits it was the lack of money that kept them from racing before the Lincoln crowd frequently. With zeal they did enjoy the laps Jim clicked off on the Track.
